Module Review
Well, here it is, my last ever blog! How sad to see such a friendship end. I thought I'd save the important stuff till the end, so here goes....
Age?
19
Sex?
Female
What is your degree subject?
English
Does 'Being Bad' relate well to the other modules you are taking?
Not really, although my basic English skills are needed for the essay writing and my creative piece, 'Being Bad' has a much more relaxed attitude, all my others modules are based on tests and essays, so this is different in the fact that it's 100% coursework assessed.
Have you found 'Being Bad' too demanding, too easy, or at an appropriate level?
Appropriate, the two part assessments made the work load easier, but the blogs meant you had to stay on track and up to date.
Do you think the list of topics covered on the module was appropriate?
Yes, all topics were issues that some people found wrong, and therefore bad, whereas others found them acceptable, so they successfully questioned peoples morals.
Are there any topics not included in the module that you would like to see included?
Euthanasia and abortion, see last blog entry.
Do you think that the format for classes has worked well?
Yes, there was a very laid back atmosphere which meant that people were encouraged to talk and get their opinions across. There were always opportunities to discuss issues and then feedback to the class.
What did you think of the module team?
All of the team was very laid back, and therefore approachable especially with assessment problems. Mark was always really helpful and replied to e mails quickly.
Do you think it would have been better to have had more:
- Small group discussions?
Not really as blogs provide an outlet for personal opinions.
- Discussion and debate among the class as a whole?
This is much more appropriate due to the size of the class and the time constraints.
- Information and talk from lecturers?
Don't quite understand what this means, but I think the lectures provided enough, sufficient information anyway.
The approach taken in the module is interdisciplinary, do you think this is a useful way of approaching the topics covered in the module?
Yes, all the topics on the module vary so much in subject matter and the way in which they are approached, so the interdisciplinary approach is an useful way to study it.
Do you think that interdisciplinary modules are a good idea?
Yes, they allow you to broaden the range of your degree and furthers knowledge in areas different to your main subject.
Do you think you have benefited from the interdisciplinary approach taken in the module?
definitely, it has provided a break from language and literature, which although good, couldn't be studied all week every week. This approach has meant that Ii get away from the norms of my main subject.
Would you like to see more modules that cover this kind of subject matter?
Yes, this module has been my favourite this semester, and I think that more modules should be offered that look at issues that question ethics and beliefs.
Are you planning to take the follow up module at level 2?
Yep, without a doubt, already circled it in my option guide for next year!
Would you recommend 'Being Bad' to a friend?
I've already told all my friends about it, causing jealousy and envy how I get all the good subjects while they get the boring crappy ones, ha ha.
Do you think the blogs were a good idea?
Yes, they kept everyone, or was supposed to, on their toes, it was a way to keep a track of what went on in the lectures. It also provided the people who are not confident enough to talk in lectures to have a rant and rave.
What did you think of the other assessments?
Personally, I would rather have two shorter ones, as we did, rather than one long one. This way the pressure is not piled onto one piece of work, and the feedback from the first one can help with the second one.
What have you learned from the module?
I've learnt that not all things considered bad are actually bad, and what one person does, may be seen as bad to someone else, such as smoking, yet they might be very religious, which others may find bad or offensive. It has also taught me to keep an open mind, and not judge people by what they believe.
Euthanasia
Just thinking about what topics I would have liked to have seen on the course that wasn't included. Since the course is called 'Being Bad' not 'Being Evil' and requires issues that question peoples morals, I believe that issues such as murder, rape and war can't really be studied. The course aims to study issues that are considered bad by some people, but acceptable to others, and why it creates the divide in opinion. Looking at this criteria I think issues such as abortion and euthanasia should be studied, as I believe they would create a conflict of opinions throughout the class. These are taboo issues that cause conflicts in ideas and beliefs and so would be ideal to study on the course. Check the links, to find out a bit more about the issues surrounding euthanasia and abortion

Panic Blogging
Just thought I'd comment on the fact that everybody has began panic blogging, the deadline is drawing near and so most of the class are stressing and posted 2 or 3 blogs a day! Will this go against us? Will whoever marks them realise that there was about 4 entries posted over the whole of the course and then 16 were posted within the final week to make themselves look good? Well this is what being a student means (well to me anyway) leaving everything to the last minute and not organising my time properly, which is why I've got 4 essays to hand in over the past 8 days, and I haven't started one of them! Oh, how student life brings such glorious things!
Found an article that offers a few tips on how to stay on top of the work load, but I feel the most important one is, "if someone asks you if you want to go down the pub when you're supposed to be revising, then you can, but make sure you put in those hours somewhere else." So that's what I've been doing wrong for the past 3 years!

Infidelity Again
I was talking to Richard Oakes in last Wednesday's lecture, although at the time I didn't know his name, and said I would have a look at his blog, as he promised it offered outrageous and controversial opinions. I was intrigued, of course, and decided to take a look, and was impressed with a lot of his views, and found his opinions on adultery, inspired by Marilyn Manson very interesting. To see what on earth I'm on about have a look for yourself at Richard's Blog posted on 2nd January.
Although I can never say I've cheated on a partner, and have never been cheated on, so I don't have that much experience in the field, I think some of those rules are a bit strange, (are you sure they can't be seen as a bit of fun?) How can having a blow job not be cheating, but having a cuddle with someone else can be???? I can say I'm not going to live my life by those rules, although they did provide me with a giggle, so thanks.

Telling Lies
Although, this lecture was before Christmas, I thought I'd leave it till now to talk about it. I don't think telling lies is that much of a big deal, everybody does it, and even if you are a good honest person, I bet you've still lied. Lying is an important part of life, it saves face, it protects peoples feelings, (as well as your safety) and they can lead to rewards.
But being lied to that is another matter, I hate being lied to, so that's why I make my lies so convincing that the person I'm lying to doesn't know their being lied to! White lies are ok, if they are not going to hurt someone, or yourself, in the long run they can be justified. Have a look at some of the stupid things kids lie about, at least when your older they're a little more inventive.
But big compulsive liars, who spin their little webs of deceit, now you are naughty people. I mean, look at the now deceased, but greatly missed, Richard Hillman from coronation Street, he was a compulsive liar who got his come-uppance, but look at all the people he hurt in the process. When lying is done to intentionally deceive and harm someone no way can that ever be justified.
Smoking Bans
Just thought I'd comment, I know I'm a bit late, about the person on the news (although I paid attention, I didn't pay that much because I can't remember his name) talking about whether smoking should be banned in public places due to passive smoking being just as harmful as actual smoking. I think this is a bit of a crappy idea, although I'm a non smoker myself I don't see why smokers should be put out. If you go to a restaurant you have a choice where to sit, smoking or non-smoking, simple as. And although I can't stand it when people light up next to me and blow smoke in my direction, I just move. I don't honestly think that smoking will be altogether banned in public places because everybody's needs have to be taken into account, including the smokers. For some more actual statistics and information where people can remember names, go to ASH.

The Breaking Of New Years Revolutions
Well four days into the New Year and I've broken all three of my resolutions, although through no fault of my own! First it was my friends Birthday, and of course I had to have a drink, or 7, just so I wasn't branded a party pooper! And yesterday my friend (not the same one) got married, so not only was there an unlimited supply of alcohol, but endless amounts of buffet food! Oh dear! I suppose once the routine of uni, work and being skint start properly that's when I can begin trying to stick to my resolutions, or if that doesn't don't work I could stick thison my fridge, me wanting to be the little knight, not the dragon!

New Years Resolutions
Well its all over for another year, was it worth all the hype, all the shopping and all the wrapping paper? Yeah, course it was! Hope everybody had a fab Xmas, and that the New Year brings everything you want, just don't get too drunk you can't remember what you've been up to!
At the minute I'm just enjoying my last few days of stuffing my face and drinking my own body weight in alcohol before the dreaded 'NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS'. They've been the same for the past three years, 1. Exercise more regularly (walking to the chippy does not count). 2. Eat more healthily (not just for the first week of the year). 3. Drink less alcohol and drink more water (not the other way around.) So, if like me you need a little help with your New Years Resolutions for both yourself and your friends, go to Resolutions, and fill in the gaps.
Don't forget, have a cool one!

Religion
Well, its nearly the end of the semester already! Shock horror. I can't believe how quick its gone. I'm really pleased with my first assessment mark, never thought adultery could be so rewarding! Definately planning on doing that 'It Shouldn't Be Allowed' next year, now I have a taste for being bad, I'm addicted, naughty girl.
Last weeks lecture on being too religious was really interesting. I agree with the majority of the class who felt that everyone has a right to their own beliefs and so all the scenarios on the list were considered 'normal/ acceptable' behaviour. But, my friend commented on how 4 nuns drove past her the other day in an Audi TT, and she had to double take because she wanted to see if they were really nuns. So, is it really that 'normal' to wear religious attire in public, my friend argued that it was, but if it was that normal why did she double take?
I also think that it is true that being too religious can be seen as boring, or intimidating. This is due to the fact that most people stereotype religious people into certain categories, either like the scary man in Wolvo who sings at you when you walk past, or Dot Cotton who is restricted from fun by her strict beliefs.

Bad Cinema (Not As Bad As Cabin Fever!)
How organised am I, I'm writing about last weeks lecture this week! Last week we watched the film 'Kids', as it's considered "Bad Cinema". Prior to the film I had heard a lot of bad things about it, that it was soft porn, that it promoted teen sex, and that it was basically a terrible film. But after watching it I totally disagreed, yes, I must admit some of the things were a little hard to watch, such as the rape scene, but I felt the film had a meaning and message to it. I felt it emphasized how attitudes to sod's are completely wrong, and that no sex is safe, even if its with a virgin! The ending was very effective because it made you realise that STD's are part of a viscous cycle, and that precautions should always be used. The fact that Casper couldn't even remember what had gone on the night before helped show how disease is passed from person to person, and sometimes neither of them know what they are getting themselves into.

Good Read
Just thought I let everyone know about the book that I've just finished reading. Its called 'The Last Year of Being Single' and is written by Sarah Tucker. It is written like a diary and portrays the double life lead by the protagonist. It is funny, witty and explores ideas about adultery, relationships and sexual behaviour. The book expresses some of the key ideas that were talked about in the adultery lecture, is adultery ok if the person is in an unfulfilling relationship? Is the person justified in lying to her fiance and boyfriend? Once I had finished it really made me think about my past judgments on adultery, it allowed me stop and think about what I would have done if I were in that situation. It's a book that shows how love can make you do stupid things, and lust can make you do even worse. I recommend it to anyone and everyone, (it does empower women though, so men watch out!)
If anyone is interested in finding out more about the book and the author, see Review

Body Modification
Really really enjoyed this weeks lecture on body modification, not only did it provide fantastic visual aids, even if there were a lil stomach turning in places, but it provided an insight into why people do these things to their bodies. As I have a tattoo myself, see Jem's Tattoo, I have always been interested in body modification, but I didn't know about some of the things that were being done to people/ and people were doing, in the name of religion, culture and fashion.
I have always though that tattoos and piercing was a way to express yourself and show your personality, and although there are risks that come with them, they are considered safe if you go to qualified people and shops. But I think the fact that people are scaring themselves by 'cutting' is disgusting. For one, its not safe, look at all the possible infections due to the open wounds, and two its only being pushed due to the fact tattoos have, if you like, become the norm, and so these people need to find newer extremes and push the limits.
This lecture opened my eyes to how big the industry of body modification is and how it is interlinked between fashion, religion and culture, what a cool topic to do my second assignment on.

Masturbation
Well, much to my disgust I couldn't make it to this weeks lecture on Masturbation, tut tut tut, but after reading some blog entries I get what the gist of the lecture was. On Tuesday night after reading the extract from 'Portnoy's Complaint' I was thinking about what topics we'd discuss in the lecture, this is what I came up with.
1/ How masturbation is seen as a bit of a taboo issue.
2/ How most of its different names relate to male masturbation than female(how many girls can spank the monkey?)
3/ How its talked about with much more comfort regarding men.

After reading both Sharon's Blog entry, posted 25th November and Sammy's, posted 19th November I realized that these were a few of the topics discussed. I thought it was interesting that some of masturbating alias' are relating to self harm, bashing the bishop, spanking the monkey, choking the chicken. Is this to do with the fact that to some people masturbation is a form of self harm? In my opinion I don't think its that big of a deal. Masturbation is not wrong, yeah ok it would be embarrassing (big understatement) if one of your parents caught you at it, but I can think worse things people could be doing.
Some issues that are worrying the society of today regarding masturbation can be found at Agony online, some are quite funny!
And for all you worried lil souls who think they're about to go blind, or lose a limb, due to too much D.I.Y. pleasure, here's a little peace of mind for you, Masturbation myths

Infidelity
Well thank God for that! The first assignment is done and dusted, and so is 30% of our final grade, a bit daunting really. Although I missed the lecture on 'infidelity' I decided to use this as the theme for my creative writing. When I was doing the research for it I thought I'd have a browse through other people's blogs to see what their opinions and feelings were on the topic, I found Simon Chinn's entry on the 5th of November useful as it contained a link to Sammy Jackson's blog which had a link to an article on adultery among women. As a result, some of themes that were bought up in this article I used in my assignment, if any one is interested take a look for yourself. For a link to Simon Chinn's blog go to Simon's Blog, posted 5th November or if you want to go straight to the article on adultery among women, go to Sammy's blog, posted 31st October and click on the link to the article.

Smoking
After Wednesday's lecture I realised how many issues surround smoking. Before all I really thought about the topic was that there are two sorts of people, smokers and non-smokers. I have never smoked, and never wanted to, but I'm not one of those preachers who reel off facts about death, black lungs and so on. In my opinion a choice is a choice, I probably choose to do a lot of things that smokers wouldn't, just as they choose to smoke and I don't.
I thought the suggestion that men and women smoke differently was spot on, if you watch men and women smoke (as I tried to do very discreetly at a party last night but gave up as most men thought I was after them, and probably so did there girlfriends, and the women was beginning to think I had an attitude problem) there are loads of differences. Not only do they hold the cigarettes differently, they smoke them differently, stub them out differently and have a complete different composure, but I have to agree with Jackie that some women smoke quite manly and vice versa.
When it comes to movies and celebrities though, I think that cigarettes are used to define characters very differently between men and women. Men who smoke seem rough and tough, ready for action whilst more than ready to seduce some more than willing woman.
Robert Mitchum, cool as a cucumber
Whereas women who smoke portray this sexual image, they come across as naughty, someone you couldn't take home to mom, but would do anything you asked.

Socail Bandits Or Just Pains In The Arse?
Just been reading through my notes from Wednesday, and thinking about the differences between bandits and 'social bandits'. To be honest I don't see that much of a difference, if they're easily bought off and would most probably turn on their so called 'own' for a bit of extra cash, then are they really fighting for justice? At the end of the day whether they're killing, stealing, maiming, or whatever they do best, someone along the line is killed or hurt. One person's 'social bandit' could be another's worst nightmare, I mean, yeah Robin Hood was an hero to the poor, but he was a bit of a pain in the arse for the rich

Abortion
I've just been reading other people's blogs, and having a nosy really, and I think Haylee bought up a really good point in her entry posted Friday the 17th of Oct, to see for yourself go to Haylee's post. I agree with Haylee that abortion is sometimes necessary and therefore a thing considered 'bad' is inevitable, but I also believe that using abortion as a form of contraception is very wrong. Both men and women have a responsibility to make a decision before having sex, whether to use contraception or not. If the choice is to use it fantastic, you can have all the fun with no diseases or babies to think of, but if the choice is not to, then the consequences should be dealt with. Abortion should not be used to solve careless mistakes, thought of as a back up in case you fall pregnant, responsible decisions about contraception should be considered before sex, not after.

Blood-Thirsty Book
Hello again. Just wondering if anyone read my mini review on 'Cabin Fever' and totally disagreed with me? Feel free to let me know what you thought of it, did you agree that it was dire, or did you think it was everything a teen horror flick should be?
Anyway, on to something new, I have started reading a book by an author that was recommended to me, by someone who likes things dark and mysterious, much like myself. The author is Poppy Z. Brite and she writes about things that are definitely BAD, ghosts, gay relationships, zombies, murder and much much more. The book that I am reading at the minute is a collection of short stories entitled 'Self Made Man'. Not only does it explore topics considered bad by most people in the world, but it would also be useful for people who are doing the creative writing for their assignment, as some of the stories are two or three pages long, although most are a lot longer.
If anyone wants to know a bit more about the book, I have added a link that takes you to a review of the book, but is entitled, 'Are You Loathsome Tonight?' as this is one of the short stories within 'Self Made Man.' If the review leaves you wanting more, you can purchase the book from any book shop, but I'm not sure if the Waterstones on campus sells it. But beware it contains some very disturbing scenes, especially the one with a transvestite and a gun! Enjoy...

Real Bad Cinema
Since this blogger is entitled 'Jem's Bad Blog' and was created by me, to say what I like, I thought I'd have a bit of a moan about how BAD, the film 'Cabin Fever' was.
I was really geared up for watching it, excited by the prospect of blood, guts and all things wonderful and instead I was subjected to complete and utter crap. Besides police men obsessed with partying, a mad, ravenous dog of a tramp, and the fantastic acting, I'm being sarcastic, the film offered nothing else!
The story started out promising, 5 teenagers staying in a isolated cabin, in the middle of nowhere, trapped by a skin eating disease, but as the film went on the story got more and more unbelievable and far fetched. This disease that they encounter, which is actually a real disease that 1500 people in America get each year, not only devoured their skin at unbelievable rates, but turned them all into no brains. Is it just me or would everyone else go back to the cabin searching for survivors if they had escaped first time round, undiseased and alive, I don't think so, but the temptation proved just too much for one of the characters, much to his downfall.
The only bit worth seeing is the scene where the cabin bicycle, if you know what I mean, shaves her legs, gross, disgusting and cringe-worthy. I mean, your legs need to be hair free when you're on the brink of death don't they, every girl would agree!
Go see 'Cabin Fever' if you like films that offer lots of blood, a few suspenseful moments, no big scares and a unconvincing story, this film will live up to all of those expectations. If, despite all warnings that you want to find out more about the film, then go to Cabin Fever webpage

New Beginning
Well, here I am, after just creating my own blog, posting my first entry and I don't know what to say. It's been a long, strenuous journey getting to this point, and now that I have reached my goal, I don't know what to do with it!

I was never this indecisive before, I blame my new student status, now that I'm expected to be a lay about and a 'part-timer', as I've so often been called, I have transformed into someone who's brain aches at the thought of posting an entry on any topic I desire. Well, here goes the beginning of a beautiful friendship between me and my blog.
